Term & Health Insurance Buying Guide 2026: Plans, Premiums & Mistakes
Compare the best term life and health insurance plans in India. What to look for, what to avoid, and how much cover you actually need.
Insurance is the most under-bought financial product in India. Millions of families have zero term insurance and rely on employer health cover that vanishes when they switch jobs. This guide covers what to buy, how much, and from whom.
Part 1: Term Life Insurance
Term insurance is pure life cover — if you die during the policy term, your family gets a lump sum. No investment component, no maturity benefit, no cashback. And that's exactly why it's the best: maximum cover at minimum cost.
Best Term Insurance Plans (2026)

| HDFC Click 2 Protect Life | 99.1% | ~₹10,800/yr | Highest claim settlement |
| ICICI iProtect Smart | 98.6% | ~₹11,200/yr | Good rider options |

| Tata AIA Sampoorna Raksha | 98.9% | ~₹10,500/yr | Competitive pricing |
| LIC Tech Term | 98.4% | ~₹12,000/yr | Government-backed trust |
*Individual claim settlement ratio for FY 2024-25. Premiums are approximate for a 30-year-old male, non-smoker, ₹1 crore cover, 30-year term. Always get a fresh quote.
How Much Cover?
Simple formula:
- Annual income × 15-20 — covers income replacement
- Plus outstanding loans — home loan, car loan
- Plus future goals — children's education, spouse's living expenses
- Minus existing assets — savings, investments, EPF, other insurance
Term Insurance Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying endowment/ULIP instead: These give 4-5% returns with inadequate cover. Buy term + invest in mutual funds separately.
- Not disclosing health history: #1 reason claims get rejected. Disclose everything — smoking, drinking, diabetes, surgery.
- Choosing cheapest premium: Claim settlement ratio matters more. A ₹500/year cheaper plan that rejects claims is worthless.
- Single life plan for dual income: If both spouses earn, both need separate term plans.
Part 2: Health Insurance
Medical inflation in India is 14% per year. A ₹5 lakh hospitalisation today will cost ₹20 lakh in 10 years. Health insurance isn't optional.

What to Check Before Buying
- Room rent cap: Should be “No cap” or “Single AC room.” A ₹5,000/day cap proportionally reduces ALL bills.
- Co-pay: Avoid policies with co-pay (you pay 10-20% of every claim).
- Sub-limits: Check for caps on specific treatments (cataract, knee surgery). “No sub-limits” is best.
- Restoration benefit: If one claim exhausts your cover, restoration recharges it for the next claim in the same year.
- Pre-existing disease waiting period: Standard is 3-4 years. Some plans offer 2 years.
- Cashless hospital network: Check that your preferred hospitals are covered.
- Claim settlement ratio: Look for 95%+ over 3 years.
Recommended Coverage Strategy
- Base plan: ₹10-15 lakh — a comprehensive policy with no room rent cap
- Super top-up: ₹50 lakh — kicks in after base is exhausted, costs only ₹3,000-5,000/year
- Parents: Separate policy — don't add parents aged 55+ to your family floater (it increases everyone's premium). Get them a dedicated senior citizen plan.
- Employer insurance: Bonus only — never rely on it as your only cover. It ends when you leave.
Part 3: Section 80D Tax Benefits
| Who | Age | Deduction Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Self + Family | Below 60 | ₹25,000 |
| Self + Family | 60+ | ₹50,000 |
| Parents | Below 60 | ₹25,000 (additional) |
| Parents | 60+ | ₹50,000 (additional) |
| Maximum Total | ₹1,00,000 |
This is over and above the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit. If you're in the 30% bracket, ₹1 lakh in 80D saves you ₹30,000 in tax.
Where to Buy
- Policybazaar — best for comparing plans across insurers, instant quotes
- Insurer website directly — sometimes offers lower premiums, avoids aggregator markup
- Avoid bank branches — they push in-house plans that may not be the best for you
